Meters are to be installed in Derry taxis from September next year, Derry Daily has learned.
Under the Department of Environment (DOE) plans, all taxis would charge a basic fare of £3 from 6.ooam to 8.00pm which then rise to £3.40 on week nights and £4.20 over the weekend.
The DOE says the plans, which also include the introduction of meters in all taxis, will provide protection from overcharging.
The proposals would see customers pay 20p for every 224 yards travelled and 20p for every 73 seconds the taxi is stationary.
Firms in Belfast, where meters have been part of taxi journeys for some time, currently charge 20p for every 270 yards.
The introduction of meters follows a period of consultation involving taxi companies, drivers and customers.
