Well-known Derry solicitor Desmond Doherty, author of the murder thriller Valberg, will this week share with students of a Welsh university his experiences of participating in several controversial public inquiries and international tribunals.
Desmond’s wide-ranging experiences come from his participation in several prominent international courts or tribunals, such as the Special Tribunal For Lebanon; the International Criminal Court for the former Yugoslavia investigating crimes against humanity; his time as a member of the defence team instructed in relation to the Iraqi Special Tribunal (Saddam Hussein); and his time representing one of the families at the Bloody Sunday Tribunal.
His current work involves the Inquiry into Hyponatraemia–related deaths and the second book in the Valberg series – published by Derry-based Guildhall Press – is due to be published next year.
His address “Inquiries, Inquests and International Law” at Bangor University on Friday will present a great opportunity for students to talk to and ask questions to a lawyer who has developed his criminal practice into a specialist human rights practice and who has worked around the world on some of the leading issues of our times.
