A comedy extravaganza recorded in front of a live audience in Derry is hit our TV screens later this month.
Funny on the Foyle – to be shown on BBC One Northern Ireland on Friday 20 December at 9.00pm – features some of the biggest and hottest names in stand-up who last month shared the stage of The Venue in Derry for evening of side-splitting humour.
Hosted by Patrick Kielty, this hour-long television special was filmed in front of an audience of 2,500 as part of Derry’s year-long City of Culture celebrations,
Providing the laughs alongside Patrick Kielty are Roy Walker, Kevin McAleer, Nuala McKeever, The Blame Game regulars Tim McGarry, Colin Murphy and Jake O’Kane, and Monumental’s Mickey Bartlett who take on everything from culture to “culchies” in their stand-up routines.
Appearing on the Derry stage brought happy memories for Kielty.
He said: “Derry is where it all started for me at the Craic’s 90 Comedy Club 20 years ago. There are very few cities in the world where the audience is genuinely funnier than the comics but Derry/Londonderry is two of them.”
Jackie Hamilton, executive producer from Moondog Productions who made the programme for BBC Northern Ireland, said Funny on the Foyle was a “fantastically funny” event.
He added: “I think comedy lovers will relish the chance to see some of the best of home-grown talent sharing the same stage all on one night. Just about every subject imaginable was touched upon by the comedians on the night, but of course there’s a special focus on my hometown of Derry and its year of culture.”
