The owners of nine dogs found straying the streets of Derry are being prosecuted by Derry City Council.
At their monthly meeting this Thursday, members of the Council’s Environmental Services Committee are expected to give the go ahead to council’s principal environmental health officer to instigate legal proceedings against the owners who failed to pay “fixed penalty” notices issued to them.
Committee members will be told the dog owners failed to pay fines despite being issued with “written reminders.”
The fines were issued by Council’s dog wardens during last December when they also responded to 26 stray dog complaints and 14 instances of dog fouling. Nineteen dogs were impounded.
Also during December there was one reported incident of a dog attack on a person and an attack on livestock.
Dog wardens also dealt with 13 injured dogs, 18 unwanted dogs and the “humane destroying” of five canines.
Meanwhile, committee members will be informed recent “Be Safe Around Dogs” workshops were “extremely successful,” with over 1,000 primary six and seven pupils from 29 primary schools attending.
