Fans with tickets for the upcoming Dublin concerts by country star Garth Brooks face an anxious wait to see if the gigs go-ahead after it emerged homeowners living close to Croke Park are considering legal action against the organisers.
Around 400,000 fans are expected to attend the five sell-out concerts taking place on 25 – 29 July next. Three extra gigs were added after the first two concerts sold out within hours of tickets going on sale. Fans in Derry were among many around the country who queued overnight to get their hands on tickets.
However, doubts have been cast over the concerts after, residents living close to Croke Park expressed their anger at the extra gigs being added claiming they will now be “locked down” for five days in a row.
It is the first time any artist will have played concerts on five consecutive days at the venue.
Residents claim they have been treated “disgracefully” by those staging the concerts.
Around 25,000 people live in the vicinity of Croke Park with about 6,000 inside a zone that is adversely affected during large events.
They claim the organisers of the concerts did not consult the residents before announcing the shows or putting the tickets on sale.
They say a legal challenge to the concerts was just one option among a number of actions they were considering including a challenge to the venue’s licence bid.
The GAA, owners of Croke Park, have given an undertaking it would not comment on the matter publicly until it had completed its consultation with residents.
Tt was the first time an artist would play five consecutive sold-out dates at the Irish venue.
