Derry’s elderly are being invited to join a steering group being set up to make Derry “more age friendly.”
The Age Friendly City Charter, launched in June last year by Ilex in partnership with Derry Healthy Cities, aims to drive forward a campaign placing older people’s views and opinions at the heart of planning, design and delivery of services, ensuring a commitment to catering for the needs of older people.
The next stage in promoting the Age Friendly City Charter is to develop a steering group that is participative and inclusive of older people.
Ilex’s Director of Strategy and Regeneration, Gerard McCleave, said: creating a “more caring” city was a key element of the One Plan and the Age Friendly Charter was another important milestone in achieving that goal.
He added: “The participation and inclusion of older people on the steering group is vital, drawing on their skills and experiences to develop and support actions that meet their needs now and in the future.”
Mayor of Derry, Cllr Martin Reilly, was one of the first people to sign the Age Friendly Charter.
He said: “I welcome this call for businesses and service providers to work together and support a range of older people’s advisory groups doing all that they can to cater for the needs of older people.
“I will continue to support this campaign which puts the needs of older people at the heart of our plans and would encourage anyone who would like to share their experiences to get involved and join the steering group.”
