The skies above Ebrington Square will be ablaze with colour this Sunday, as Derry’s own squad of kite-runners launch hundreds of their original creations into the air.
Local children, aged five to 11, are invited to sign up for a special Kite-making workshop taking place between 1.00pm – 5.00pm in the Square as part of a joint initiative between Derry City Council and STEM Aware, with support from the Peace III Programme managed for the Special EU Programmes Body by the North West Peace III Cluster.
This event is taking place on International Peace Day and will add a touch of family fun to a citywide weekend programme of cultural celebrations taking place over the weekend, including MTV Crashes Ebrington and Culture Night on Friday evening, the CultureTech Festival, which runs throughout the weekend, the Club MTV DJ night on Saturday, and the Music Trail on Sunday night.
Director of Legacy with Derry City Council, Oonagh McGillion, said the Kite Building Day would bring some alternative outdoor fun to the weekend.
She added: “I am delighted that we are hosting this event in our scenic shared space in Ebrington, it’s a great opportunity for families to get creative and enjoy a unique family day out.
“STEM Aware do amazing work in the community introducing creative and innovative approaches to educating young people, and it’s fantastic that Derry City Council has the opportunity to support STEM in promoting learning. This is a fun way to both introduce new skills and get creative with the kids.”
Using teamwork, problem solving skills and thinking completely outside the box, all participants will engage with fun as they learn about topics such as CSI, Building Bridges and Structures, Air Pressure, Electricity, Renewable Energy, Rockets, Robotics and many more. STEM Aware likes to refer to this learning as “Sneaky Learning.”
Roisin Crawford from the organisation gave a rundown of the day’s events: “STEM Aware will be facilitating kite making workshops for children and families using easy to follow prepared kits.
“However should you feel you are keen for an extra challenge to overcome the dynamics of air flight, there will be opportunities to create your own kites from basic materials provided.
“There will be other engaging challenges such as catapults, flight creations, pin wheels and rockets and The ‘Peace’ of Art workshop will have engagement for all ages to help celebrate International World Peace Day. You don’t need to be a scientist or an engineer to take part, just be prepared to overcome the gravity of sitting in the house and come and be part of International ‘Whirled’ Peace Day.”
Entry to the event costs £1 per child which includes entrance to all activities, as well as kite-making materials.
