THE funeral for veteran civil rights activist Paddy Doherty has taken place in Derry today.
Mr Doherty – known affectionately as ‘Paddy Bogside’ – died last week following a battle against illness.
The father-of-13 was aged 89.
Hundreds gathered at St Eugene’s Cathedral in Derry for Requiem Mass at 12.30 pm.
Mourners heard Father Paul Farren pay tribute to Mr Doherty, saying: “Where there is no road, some people build a road”.
Among the mourners were deputy first minister Martin McGuinness and Assembly Speaker Mitchel McLaughlin and Snow Patrol band member Johnny McDaid.
Mr Doherty was very active in the civil rights movement of the late 1960s and early 1970s and, subsequently, worked for the community in his city.
His cortege paused briefly at Free Derry Corner en route to St Eugene’s Cathedral.
Following Requiem Mass, Mr Doherty’s remains were taken to the City Cemetery for burial.
