FIGURES released today reveal that the population of Derry City and Strabane District Council is expect to rise by 1.5 per cent by 2024.
According to the statistics, the population within the council boundary was 149,200 at 2014.
But now that is forecast to rise to 151,400 within the next eight years.
The population across the North of Ireland is forecast to rise by 5.3 % to 1.94 million by 2024.
The working age population is expected to rise by up just 0.8% with the pensioners population set to leap up 26%.
It is not clear if the NI Statistics and Research Agency has factored in figures for migrant refugees starting new lives in the North now or in the future.
Derry recently welcomed in refugees who fled war torn Syria with their spouses and children to seek sanctuary here and give their families hope for a brighter and peaceful future..
