Anyone intending to enter this year’s Waterside Half Marathon would need to get their sprinting shoes on and register for the event if they want to avoid an increased entry fee.
The popular annual event, which will set off from Gransha grounds on Sunday next, September 8, is expected to attract up to 2,000 participants and the large numbers taking part has resulted in the organisers announcing no entries would be accepted on the day of the event.
An information and registration point was set up in Foyleside Shopping Centre on Friday last to encourage final registrations and issue special event packs.
However, Derry City Council and the organisers, said there was still time to register for what has become one of the top sporting/fun events held in the city.
They said entries would be accepted online up until 5.00pm today but stressed there would be no entries accepted on race day. However, they added entries would be accepted at Lisnagelvin Leisure Centre from tomorrow until friday – but an increased entry fee.
Urging hopefuls to register as soon as possible, Derry Mayor Martin Reilly said: “There will be no means to register on race day so it is essential that you go online or contact Lisnagelvin centre to secure your registration now.”
Now in its 32nd year the Waterside Half Marathon is supported by Seagate, City of Derry Spartans, Asda and O2 and by official charity Macmillan Cancer. The event kicks off at 10.30am at Gransha grounds and a full programme of family focused activities are planned from 10.00am until 1.00pm.
Race events include the 13.1m Half Marathon, the Three Person Team Relay, Ten Mile Walk Challenge and 2K Family Fun Run.
Wheelchair participants will start approximately two minutes before the main race. Participants in the Ten Mile walk will start at the earlier time of 10.00am.
Entry information can be accessed at www.derrycity.gov.uk/halfmarathon or by ringing Lisnagelvin Leisure Centre on 028 71347695.
As always a number of family friendly events will also take place on the day, including the 2k Family Fun Run. This will run alongside the Waterside Half Marathon course and begin at 10.45am behind the U3A Foyle building, finishing in time for participants to cheer the half marathon runners home.
Ribboned medals and goodie bags will be awarded to all finishers.
