A cross-border rail link between Derry and Donegal should be made an issue in next year’s European Elections, a Donegal TD has said.
Deputy Joe McHugh, the Fine Gael TD for Donegal North East (which includes Inishowen) is backing the West Ulster Rail Initiative which was launched in Letterkenny at the weekend.
The initiative is bringing together campaigners from Donegal, Derry, Monaghan, Tyrone, Cavan and Fermanagh to come together to promote railway development on a cross-border basis, using disused rail lines which the group believes can provide the foundations for substantial cross-border rail infrastructure.
Deputy Mc Hugh said he would continue to press the rail issue in Leinster House and urged people to use next year’s poll to put the rail issue at the forefront of the European agenda.
