Derry City Council is letting the air out of the sale of illegal car tyres in the city, the Derry Daily can reveal.
The crackdown follows concerns expressed about the safey of part worn tyres and has resulted in three local businesses admitting breaches of the Motor Vehicle Tyre (Safety) Regulations 1994.
A spokesperson said the Environmental and Consumer Team of Derry City Council’s Environmental Health Department, in conjunction with other Distinct Councils, undertook a sampling exercise across the North.
Eighteen District Councils took part in the sampling exercise in December last year and three part worn tyres submitted for testing by the City Council, were found “not to fully comply” with the requirements with safety regulations.
In April, the Council’s Environmental Services Committee was granted permission to instigate legal proceedings against the owners of the three businesses supplying the part worn tyres.
As a result the three businesses involved pleaded guilty to “certain breaches” of the Motor Vehicle Tyre (Safety) Regulations 1994.
Meanwhile, Environmental Health Department/Council warned worn tyre retailers that it was essential they ensured any tyres they suppled fully complied with the requirements of the Motor Vehicle Tyre (Safety) Regulations 1994.
A council spokesperson said: “In view of the failure rate detected further checks and sampling shall take place in the future.”
