Residents of a Waterside street, who have been campaigning for over 30 years to preserve one of the city’s most iconic views, are angered they were not informed a proposed controversial housing scheme to be built opposite their homes was to be discussed today at a meeting of Derry City Council’s planning committee.
Developers Foyleview Builders are looking to construct a 20-house social housing scheme on the Old Quarry site.
The view from Dunfield Terrace is recognised worldwide featuring on postcards of the city and as a backdrop by journalists, both local and international, when reporting news stories from the city.
Residents are objecting to the development on a number of environmental issues including concern that damage could be caused to their homes and long-term stability of the quarry as well as traffic conjestion
One resident, Felicity McCall, said they had been given an assurance they would be informed when the matter was to be brought before the council but “were not.”
The planning committee is due to discuss the matter this afternoon. The residents, who have vowed to continue their battle against the proposed development, are hoping the matter will be deferred.
