A local vet has described the treatment of a dying puppy as the worst case of animal cruelty he has ever seen.
Staff at the Rainbow Centre are also “appalled” by the death of the animal found yesterday outside the city’s dog pound at Pennyburn industrial estate.
Because of the condition the animal was in, the Centre has appealed to the public to help trace the dog’s owner as they are gravely concerned about the welfare of its mother and members of a possible litter.
The female member of the public who discovered the animal was so concerned about its condition she took it straight to the Rainbow Centre.
A spokesperson for the Centre said staff were “horrified by what the saw.”
The spokesperson added: “This little pup, maybe not even 10 weeks old, male, black, possibly a whippet or lab cross, was dying in front of their eyes. He was rushed immediately to the vet but very sadly the poor little pup did not make it and died overnight.”
The vet who treated the dying puppy said it was in so bad a condition there was nothing he could do to keep it alive.
He said: “The pup was completely emaciated. He had no body reserves whatsoever. He was extremely dehydrated to the extent that we were unable to get a drip line into his vein. He had an extremely heavy worm burden so was never treated for worms and is an indication there are other pups in the litter. ”
The vet it was was hard to tell what age the pup was because the starvation would have stunted his growth.
He added: “He was no doubt neglected since birth. He was hours away from death by the time he came to us. It was the worst case I have ever seen. ”
Meanwhile, the Rainbow Centre has appealed to members of the public to trace the dog’s owner.
The spokesperson said: “We at the centre are appalled at this and would appeal to anyone who has information to contact us. We are extremely concerned that there are other pups where this one came from and are also concerned about the mother’s welfare. Such blatant cruelty and neglect of a defenceless pup is disgusting and inexcusable.”
