A training course take place in Derry later this month is aimed at bringing Catholics and Protestants in the city closer to together.
Local community groups, organisations and individuals are being invited to register for an ‘Introduction to Community Relations’ training course that is being organised by Derry City Council, as part of its Good Relations Strategy.
The course is organised for local groups, volunteers and members of staff who have limited or no previous knowledge of community relations. The course is free and aims to help people with limited prior knowledge understand what Community Relations is about and consider locally relevant issues at a basic level including diversity, equality, sectarianism, prejudice and the impact of the past on society and communities today.
Encouraging people to take part in the course, Sue Divin, community relations officer with Derry City Council, it was being run under the council’s the Good Relations Strategy which aims to make a “meaningful difference locally” to attitudes and actions, policies and places “in a society in transition from conflict to lasting peace.”
She added community relations training was “a good building block for understanding a shared society” and the course was a good start for those interested in developing their own skills and knowledge or wanting to progress onto accredited courses for facilitation, mediation or community work locally.
Funding for the course, which will take place on Thursday, 19 September, is through the District Councils Good Relations Programme (OFMDFM)
Closing date for registration is Thursday next, 19 September, and the course will run from 9.30am to 3.45pm at the Peace and Reconciliation Group offices on Bishop Street.
The course is non-accredited, but a certificate of attendance will be provided for all those who participate.
