The Derry “LondonDerry” has finished well down the field at the end of the first race in 2013-2014 Clipper Round the World Yacht Race.
The result will be a big disappointment to Derry skipper Sean McCarter, especially considering the local boat led at one stage and was always within touching distance of the leaders.
Invest Africa took first spot by five miles after race organisers were forced to shorten the course because of prevailing conditions.
GREATBritain pipped Qingdao by just 0.07 miles to come in second and third place respectively.
Two teams received time penalties for infringing the Dover Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS). As a result, Mission Performance and Old Pulteney, slipped from potential second and third positions to the bottom of the table.
Invest Africa skipper Rich Gould said the win was a “really nice morale booster” and by winning race one was a “really great way” to start the race.
He added: “It is fantastic to get 12 points in the bag already.”
Derry “LondonDerry” Doire tied with the Henri Lloyd in eighth place. Even though they were separated by several miles on the water, both their distances to the “waypoint” were used to determine the finishing order when the race was shortened.
All the teams will now take a three-day stopover before the race to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, starts on Monday from the Rade du Brest.
The result of race one is as follows:
1, Invest Africa; 2, Great Britain; 3, Qingdao ; 4, Team Garmin; 5, PSP Logistics ; 6, OneDLL; 7, Switzerland; 8 (tie), Derry “LondonDerry” Doire, Henri Lloyd; 10, Jamaica ; 11, Old Pulteney; 12, Mission Performance.
Like the competitors, Derry Daily will also enjoy the break but will be back on Monday to continue to bring you regularly daily updates.
