Mayor Reilly has called on Translink to clarify the reasons behind its decision to put the start of the £22 million back to next year.
Translink has said the postponement is due to problems with procurement issues.
Mayor Reilly said: “This is extremely disappointing news for the city and the entire North West region. It is pivotal that Translink clarify the reasons for the delay and why these problems were not foreseen and adequate measures put in place to ensure delivery of this important infrastructural investment.”
He added as the end of the City of Culture approached, it was “hugely frustrating” that infrastructural development and investment in transport for the North West had been put off for a year.
The Mayor said it was vital that a “proper” inter-city service be provided between Derry and Belfast to allow more tourists to get here quicker and for citizens and businesses to enjoy easier and more frequent journeys.
Cllr Reilly said he would be seeking a meeting with Translink to discuss this decision when he would also seek clarification with regards to the results of the public consultation regarding the preferred option for the city’s railway station.
He added: “Translink embarked on a detailed public consultation some time ago to gauge public views on a preferred location for the city’s railway station and promised that the results would be available in August.”
The Mayor concluded: “I will be asking Translink officials to make public the results of the consultation so that the city can progress with this important facility for the city.”
