The skipper of the Derry entry in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race is delighted at the start his crew has made in the Race 2 of the event.
The Derry LondonDerry” Doire is currently in second place less than a mile behind leading boat GREAT Britain with Invest Africa, winner of Race 1, in third spot.
With 4,800 miles to go to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, it is early days, but Sean McCarter is hopeful of taking a podium spot
The Derry “LondonDerry” Doire set up at a blistering pace from the start line the French port of Brest yesterday afternoon and have been pegged back
McCarter, however, is delighted with the start.
He said: “We hit the start line at speed and a couple of quick tacks later bore away around the windward mark in first position.
“Our trimmers and helms worked hard on the 30miles fetch out of the bay and we extended our lead on the fleet. Once into the notorious Bay of Biscay, we freed off by 15 degrees and hoisted our heavyweight Asymmetric. Although it took us a while to get moving, it wasn’t long before we were touching 13-14 knots Speed over Ground.”
