The number of people “on the dole” in Derry has increased slightly, newly released figures show.
Statistics issued this morning by the Northern Ireland Department of Enterprise Trade and Investment show 6,273 people – almost nine per cent of the population – are claiming unemployment benefit here.
The figures show a total of 46 people joined the “dole queue” last month. Derry CIty Council area remains the highest area for unemployment. In total, 62,200 people across the North “signed on” last month.
Meanwhile, huge crowds are attending a major “Jobs Fair” being held today in the city’s Millennium Forum.
A spokesperson for the organisers said a large number of companies were in attendance and “jobs are available.”
