A local girls’ school are today hosting a day-long festival of music to rival BBC Radio One’s “One Big Weekend.”
Classes at Thornhill College in Culmore are to be suspended for the “One Big Day” festival featuring local musicians and pupils.
As well as showcasing local talent featured during the City of Culture, the event will raise money towards the building of a school in Sudan.
All pupils are being asked to contribute £2 for festival entry, all of which will be added to the school’s ongoing support for the project. Students will receive specially made wristbands as their entry ticket.
The festival will kick off at 9.30am with a performance from The Plantin and culminate with headline act Best Boy Grip taking to the stage.
A host of other high quality entertainment will feature in between as well as music workshops and a range of activities and entertainment – including bungee, bouncy castle, face-painting – for which payment will be required.
The day is non-uniform and pupils be allowed wear “festival gear.”
The event will take place outdoors in the grounds of the college, so pupils are advised to be prepared for the weather and dress appropriately.
Elizabeth Quigley, One Big Day event co-ordinator, said she hoped the event would be a “big success.”
She added: “It both celebrates the love of music within our school and also encourages all pupils to participate in making music at some level.”
