A major computer programming event being held in Derry today will be the biggest ever of its kind, organisers have said.
More than 5,000 young people are expected to take part in the BT Monster Dojo which will offer sessions on computer programming to young people aged 11-18 with volunteer mentors from a number technology companies, including BT, taking part.
Since it was set up two years ago by Cork teenager James Whelton, CoderDojo has expanded throughout the world with volunteer-led clubs running in major cities such as Dublin, London, San Francisco and Tokyo.
No experience is necessary for anyone wishing to participate in the event which will feature a “CoderDojo Divas” session for girls.
Bill Liao, from CoderDojo, said since it began the CoderDojo movement had seen huge growth and it was “fitting” the largest CoderDojo ever attempted was taking place in Derry.
Today’s event is the latest in CultureTECH programme, the week-long celebration of digital technology, media and music taking place in the city and which comes to a close tomorrow.
