Derry triathlete Aileen Reid has put in a superb performance to take the runner-up spot in the Elite Women section of the Grand Final of the World Series.
Reid, Ireland’s top ranked triathlete, finished second behind Great Britain’s Non Stanford who claimed the 2013 Elite Women’s ITU World Championship after a dramatic Grand Final race in London earlier today.
Stanford finished 25 seconds ahead of Aileen Reid (formerly AIleen Morrison) and a further three seconds ahead of Australia’s Emma Moffatt in third.
The result has moved the Derry star from 11th to eighth in the world rankings. She previously had a second place finish at the Madrid World Triathlon Series along with numerous podium finishes at World and Continental Cup level.
Reid (31) competed in the World Triathlon Series in cities, which culminated in t0day’s Grand Final in London.
It has been a brilliant season for the Derry athlete who has bounced back from the disappointment of last summer’s London Olympics when she crashed on the first lap of the bike section which saw her cross the line in disappointing 3rd position in a time of 2.08.16, nine minutes behind winner Nicola Spirig,
