Jim McGuinness is to stay on as Donegal manager after being given the backing of the county’s clubs last night.
The clubs agreed to back the Glenties man for the 2014 season after he indicated he wanted to continue in the job.
It had been thought many were unhappy with McGuinness’s dual role as county manager and performance coach at Glasgow Celtic, a position he up took after leading his home county to All-Ireland glory in 2012.
This year has been disappointing for last year’s All-Ireland champions. Relegation from Division One was followed by an Ulster final defeat to Monagahn and a humiliating 4-17 to 1-10 defeat to James Horan’s Mayo at the All-Ireland quarter-final stage.
McGuinness had been a revelation since taking over at the helm in 2010 securing two Ulster titles and an All-Ireland crown last season.
It is believed a decision earlier in the week by Donegal clubs to a new Donegal Championship structure convinced McGuinness to want to say in the post.
The 2014 Donegal Championship will not start until after Donegal exit the Ulster and All-Ireland Championships. The decision got the backing of the clubs by a 26 to six margin.
