It’s Gas Safety Week (16 to 22 September) and the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland is reminding everyone to be “gas safe” this winter.
Gas users are being urged to ensure all gas appliances are serviced by an engineer. Incorrectly installed or maintained heating and cooking appliances can result in the leakage of carbon monoxide – an invisible, odourless poison, which can cause ill health or even death.
A spokesperson for the Health and Safety Executive said every year, far too many people suffer from preventable gas-related accidents, such as gas leaks, explosions, fires and carbon monoxide poisoning. As people begin to use their central heating systems this autumn, the chance of a carbon monoxide leak increases.
The spokesperson added:”Checking appliances regularly for damage and having your boiler professionally serviced by a Gas Safe Registered engineer, just once a year, could significantly reduce the risk of leaks by detecting problems early.
“September is the ideal time to do this, as you usually aren’t yet relying on your heating daily.”
