Derry’s Republic of Ireland midfielder is to end his self-imposed exile and make himself available for selection for the international squad following the departure Giovanni Trapattoni.
The 25-year-old Everton midfielder made himself unavailable for international duty following last year’s European Championship finals in which the 74-year-old Italian failed to use his services.
However, the 74-year-old Italian’s departure has now led Gibson to offer his services once again and he has said he would be “happy” to play under Martin O’Neill, the man being hotly tipped to succeed Trapattoni.
Gibson said he felt he “could not just play under him anymore” following the Republic’s disappointing Euro 2012 appearance.
He added: “I was embarrassed when I came back from the Euros after not winning a game and not getting on the pitch. I was playing every week at the time for Everton and we finished in the top six of the Premier League.
“Obviously I didn’t get on and I just felt he had some sort of problem with me – but I felt he had a problem with me before the Euros as well as I never played.”
He concluded: “Like I said, I didn’t want to make a big deal about not playing under him, so I kept myself quiet. But I am available to come back now.”
