Northern Ireland Environment Minister Mark H Durkan was last night told to “burn” plans for an multi-pound incinerator plant on the outskirts of Derry.
Around 50 people last night attended a meeting with Mr Durkan o express their objections to a proposed waste treatment plant in Strathfoyle.
Residents from the area, who have set up the group Zero Waste North West, believe the proposed multi-million pound incinerator will be a health hazard and cause untold damage to the local environment.
They also believe the gasification plant will become the main incinerator for the entire North West and beyond.
The group are putting pressure on Derry MLA Durkan to stop the plant.
They claim over 5,000 Derry people have signed a petition against the £500 million development with “hundreds more signing every week.”
They are also looking for a judicial review against the planning decision to give the go-ahead for the scheme.
One of the those at the meeting was Derry City Councillor Shaun Gallagher who is supporting the development.
Cllr Gallagher, who lives in Ballyarnett on the other side of the River Foyle, said he lived “very near” the proposed project and would not be in favour of it it he thought it put the lives of this children in danger
Following the meeting, Mr Durkan said he would make a decision on the matter after hearing from all sides concerned.
