Lynn Fleming, a Sinn Fein councillor in the Waterside area of Derry, is to step down from Derry City Council to take up a new role within the party.
Cllr Fleming has served the Waterside constituency for the past 16 years and was Mayor of Derry from 2005-2006.
Confirming the long-serving councillor’s departure, Andrew McCartney, Sinn Fein chairperson in Derry, said Cllr Fleming would step down “within an agreed timeframe” ahead of the review of public administration (RPA) takes shape and subsequent changes to local councils.
Mr McCartney added: “Lynn will be taking up a new role within the party locally. We would like to thank her for her many years of service. As a councillor Lynn helped build the Sinn Féin support base in the Waterside.”
Mr McCartney said an internal party selection process would now begin and once that was complete Sinn Fein would announce a replacement for co-option onto the Council.
