The organisers of the Derry Fleadh will say a “go raibh mile math agat” (a thousand thank yous) to the volunteers who helped make the event a success at a special party being held in the city tonight
More than 1,0oo people gave up their time during last month’s Fleadh to help ensure the event, which attracted record-breaking crowds of 430,000 people, ran smoothly.
Volunteers carried out a range of duties including helping at competition venues, collecting performers from airports and ports, assisting at campsites, stewarding in the city centre, dealing with enquiries and many other activities.
Eibhlín Ní Dhochartaigh, chairperson of the Fleadh Executive Committee which organised the event, thanked the people of Derry for their support in the run-up to and during the Fleadh.
She said the success of the Fleadh could not have been possible without the service given by the many volunteers of all ages.
She added: “This year’s Fleadh has set an All-Ireland standard by being the biggest and best Fleadh ever and has also earned Derry the right to bring the Fleadh back in the near future. The people of the city were magnificent in how they received our visitors from all over the world and showed the generosity and good nature for which we are renowned.
“It is important that we, the people of this city, congratulate ourselves on a job well done and then begin the discussion on how we build on the wonderful achievements that have occurred during the Fleadh.”
Tonight’s event will be held in The Venue, Ebrington Square and volunteers can gain entry by producing the tee-shirt they were issued at the time of the Fleadh.
