If you think you could compete in the Clipper Round the World Yacht 2015-16 Race then you need to get along to the City Hotel in Derry tonight where a “crew recruitment presentation” is being held by the organisers.
A record 670 people, from all walks of life are currently competing in ninth edition of 40,000 mile, 11 month biennial event in which the Derry entry, Derry “LondonDerry” Doire, is battling for the lead in Race 2 of the event – a 5,000 mile crossing of the Atlantic Ocean from Brest in France to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.
The fleet is due to stop-over in Derry in June next year and is expected to attract tens of thousands of visitors to the banks of the Foyle.
At tonight’s event, which gets underway at 6.00pm, David Cusworth, crew recruitment and development director who completed a circum-navigation during the Clipper 2002 Race, will give a first-hand nsight into what it is like taking on the world’s toughest oceans.
Founded by legendary yachtsman Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the Clipper Race is designed to provide everyone – regardless of sailing experience – the chance to race across oceans and taste the exhilaration of completing a circum-navigation. Since its inception in 1995, the race has turned over 3,500 novices into ocean racers.
