Councillor Kelly said the initiative would “go some way” to help welcome new people to the city.

He added: “It can be a very daunting task for anyone moving to a new country, trying to set up home and trying to break down any language barriers. The contribution that these workers have made both to our economy and society is extremely valuable and has led to a greater opening up of Irish society, bringing new skills and diverse cultures to our shores, enriching our communities.

The classes will be delivered by the NW Academy of English and cost only £10 for ten classes.

Anyone wishing to register for a place on the course and to receive an application form should contact: NW Academy of English, 6a Northland Rd, BT487HU, Tel: 028 71 37077. E-mail: [email protected].
