Mayor of Derry Cllr Martin Reilly has congratulated local rector Rev Pat Storey on becoming the first ever woman to be appointed bishop by the Anglican Church in the British Isles.
Rev Storey, rector at St Augustine’s Church of Ireland in the city, has been appointed as the new Bishop of Meath and Kildare.
Mayor Reilly said the 53-year-old would make a “great bishop.”
He added: “I am absolutely delighted Rev Storey has been appointed to this significant position within the Church of Ireland. She is a fantastic lady and will make a great bishop.
The people of Derry will greatly miss her but we know she will keep in regular contact and will promote our city in her new ministry.
“Rev Storey has played a huge role in working with all communities in this city and I am confident she will continue to build bridges and unite communities wherever she goes.”
The 53-year-old mother-of-two, married to a Church of Ireland clergyman, the Rev Earl Storey, studied French and English at Trinity College Dublin, before training at the Church of Ireland Theological College.
She was ordained a deacon in 1997 and a priest the following year. The bishop-elect has been rector of St Augustine’s since 2004.
She also worked for a time as a youth worker in Kill O’ The Grange parish in Dublin.
