Following the incident, The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service has reminded householders of the importance of having working smoke alarms in their homes.

The reminder follows an incident in the city in which the sound of an alarm resulted in firefighters attending an incident in Northland Road.

Details of the incident, which occurred on Thursday last, have just been released.

According to a firefighters were alerted by a passerby who heard a smoke alarm in a semi-detached house.

Local crews entered the premises and discovered an unattended pot on a cooker.

Two hosereel jets were deployed to deal with the incident while a ventilation fan was used to clear the smoke from the building.

The member of the public has been praised for his actions by the Fire Service who said he acted properly in alerting firefighters.
