Derry athlete Aileen Reid’s successful season continued yesterday when she won the first running of the Belfast Half Marathon.
The talented City of Derry Spartan runner, a silver medallist in last weekend’s ITU Triathlon in London, cruised to victory in a time of 1:9:30.
In the absence of pre-race favourite Breege Connolly (North Belfast Harriers), Reid always looked strong and in control, showing little or no signs of fatigue from last weekend’s exploits.
Pure Running Half Marathon Series winner, Julie Balmer, produced her second quickest half marathon time of the year, recording 1:23:56 to claim second place.
Kelly Neely continued her rise to the top of the local road running scene with another excellent performance; the City of Lisburn AC lady completing the ladies podium in 1:24:50 ).
Reid finished second in last weekend’s World Triathlon Series Grand Final in London when she came in 24 seconds behind Britain’s winner Non Stanford, whose victory clinched this year’s world title for the Welsh triathlete. The Derry triathlete’s runner-up finish in London moved her up to eighth overall in the world series.
North Belfast runner Scullion won the men’s race in 1:06.55, just under two minutes ahead of Eddie McGinley with Brendan Teer in third.
Four thousand people took part the race, which started from the City Hall and went via Stranmillis and the Lagan Valley towpath finishing at the Mary Peters track.
