It was a case of “dreams come true” yesterday for local fans of “Hollyoaks” when they got to meet the stars of the hit television soap series.
Five leading cast members of the hit Channel 4 soap arrived in Derry on Monday last to spend five days recording a storyline centred around a sham marriage.
The plot being filmed this week involves Phoebe McQueen (Mandip Gill) and Vincent Elegba (John Omole) and is expected to be screened on November 15 next.
Among the fans who got to meet stars during a break in recording in and around Guildhall Square yesterday was 15-year-old Eimear Browne.
She said: “We spent a few hours watching them filming and when they were finished they came over to meet us. They were really friendly and they took time to give us their autographs and have our photographs taken with them.”
The producers agreed to record two episodes here as a result of Derry being chosen as the UK CIty of Culture. Hollyoaks was devised by Phil Redmond, the man who chaired the panel of judges who named Derry the UK’s first City of Culture.
Shona McCarthy, chief executive of Culture Company 2013, said having Hollyoaks recorded here would provide a great platform for showing the city to a “new young audience.”
She added: “The city is looking so fantastic at the minute I’m sure it’s going to shine like a real star of the show when the storyline airs on Channel 4.”
