Derry MLA Maeve McLaughlin has called for an “implementation body” to be set up for the expansion of the Magee College campus of the University of Ulster to create 9,400 places.
Speaking following a meeting with Richard Barnett and Deirdre Heenan from University of Ulster (UU) , the Sinn Fein MLA said it was time for Derry City Council, U4D, Chamber of Commerce, community representatives and local politicians to form such a group.
She said: “At last week’s Assembly debate the DEL Minister Stephen Farry confirmed that if the Magee expansion for 9,400 places was a stand-alone project then a business case would be required. In light of this clarification, I believe it is now time is for UU to work in partnership with DCC and others to commission this business case to deliver on our common objective.”
Ms McLaughlin said proposals for next steps would be taken to the city’s strategy board next week and she was looking forward to working with “all supporters” to ensure “this much needed projec”t is kept at the top of the North West agenda.
