Almost £200,000 improvement works are to be carried out at a Derry walkway once blighted by anti-social behaviour.
Transport Minister Danny Kennedy has announced £179,000 has been allocated for the scheme to be carried out the Lowry’s Lane Greenway. Work on the project is due to begin next week and is due to be completed by mid-June.
Speaking in Derry this morning, Minister Kennedy, who also opened a new £450,000 traffic free greenway for walkers and cyclists at Bay Road, said the Lowry’s Lane project would create 445 metres of “traffic free greenway.”
The Department is contributing £154,000 with additional funding of £25,000 being provided by Derry City Council. The work is to be undertaken by Tyrone-based Newtownstewart Construction Limited.
The Bay Road pathway, which runs from Bay Road (next to Da Vinci’s Hotel) is part of the city’s Active Travel Programme and was also part-funded by the Department of Regional Development.
The project involved the construction of a 600 metres extension to the riverside walkway including upgrades to shore paths and an off road connection. The Department provided £425,000 to the cost of the project with Derry City Council contributing £25,000.
The overall cost for the Derry City Council Active Travel Demonstration Projects is £1.3 million over three years.
City Mayor Cllr Martin Reilly said the project was an “excellent example” of successful partnership between government agencies.
He added: “This scheme further enhances the citywide network of off-road walking and cycling provision and provides additional recreational facilities and an opportunity for people to enjoy increased levels of good health and well-being through physical and outdoor activity.”
