Derry City’s hopes of gaining a place in next season’s Europa Cup have taken a serious knock back following a 2-0 defeat to Bohemians at Dalymount Park tonight.
The hosts went ahead as early as the fifth minute when Ryan McEvoy converted from the penalty spot after Stephen Traynor was adjudged by referee Alan Kelly to be bundled over in the box by David McDaid.
Indecision in the Derry defence eight minutes later allowed Keith Buckley to set up Dinny Corcoran but his shot was deflected narrowly wide.
Bohs deservedly double their lead in the 22nd minute Buckley’s driving run from inside his own half ended in a sublime header from McEvoy that flew past a helpless Gerard Doherty.
Derry’s best chance of the half arrived in the 41st minute but Rory Patterson’s 20-yard volley inched narrowly wide of Dean Delany’s left-hand upright.
After the break both Luke Byrne and Corcoran went agonisingly close to extending Bohs’ lead inside the opening seven minutes of the second-half.
City were reduced to ten men in the 68th minute was Ryan McBride was adjudged to have tripped Corcoran as the Bohemians striker raced clear on goal.
