England’s 1966 World Cup hat-trick hero Geoff Hurst is in Derry tonight to attend the McDonald’s Irish FA Community Awards being held in the Millennium Forum.
The awards recognise and reward the clubs, coaches and volunteers who make outstanding contributions to grassroots football right across Northern Ireland.
Among those nominated for the People’s Award, one of the top accolades up for grabs on the night, is local youth football coach Gerry Colhoun.
Gerry has been involved with grassroots football in Derry for over 30 years. In that time, his involvement in the local game has seen him work for many years as a club coach at Trojans YFC before progressing to the prestigious role of district coach.
A host of footballing stars are attending the event including former Northern Ireland, Tottenham and Arsenal goalkeeper and legendary Liverpool striker Ian Rush.
Geoff Hurst is the only player in history to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final, his three goals helping England to a controversial 4-2 extra time win over West Germany.
