Sinn Féin have urged anyone with information about the sale of illegal fireworks in Derry to contact police.
Appealing for the safe and responsible use of fireworks in the run up to Halloween, Cllr Tony Hassan said he had been with complaints this week about the use of fireworks and “bangers” in the Greater Shantallow area, especially the sale of illegal fireworks from cars.
Cllr Hassan said: “I have been contacted by people across the district and in particular by residents living in Shantallow and Moss Park areas who are very concerned about youngsters throwing bangers into the backyards of their homes and at passing cars on the very busy Glengalliagh road.”
Cllr Hassan said there were also illegal fireworks were being sold from cars in the area.
He added: “This is a very worrying development and I would urge anyone who has information on who is selling the fireworks to contact the police or community leaders. Those behind the selling of these fireworks need to be brought before the courts.”
Cllr Hassan concluded: “In many cases the people selling these fireworks are deliberately targeting young people. In turn, a lot of young people are using fireworks unsupervised and irresponsibly resulting in many cases in serious injuries. I call on those who are engaged in this type of activity to stop and reflect on how their actions can cause serious injuries and harm.”
