Race 2, Day 20: The crew of the Derry entry in the Clipper Round the World Yacht race are “overjoyed” to be “properly sailing” again after emerging from the Doldrums.
The Derry “LondonDerry” Doire is just under 2,000 miles from the finish line of Race 2 – the 5,000 mile Altantic cross from Brest in France to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.
Sean McCarter, skipper of the one-time leaders of Race 2, said he was delighted to be “powering” towards Rio.
He said: “I am delighted to report the Derry~Londonderry~Doire is happily heeling over at about 30 degrees, powering along towards Rio through relatively calm seas at about nine knots!
“We haven’t had the discussion – everyone is avoiding the topic like the plague for fear that as soon as we agree we are, the wind will die! Even though we’ve been moving well all day, we didn’t dare take the windseeker off the foredeck until after dusk for fear Murphy’s Law would strike.
“We are all so overjoyed to be sailing properly again that the realities of living at a 30 degree angle haven’t really kicked in yet. Crew now move around the deck and down below with hands and legs bracing to avoid the next big stumble.”
