Derry native Darren Gibson has been recalled to the Republic of Ireland squad by interim manager Noel King for next month’s World Cup double header against Germany and Kazakhstan.
Gibson quit international football after falling out with former manager Giovanni Trapattoni following the European championships in 2012.
Gibson was perplexed at not featuring in any of Ireland’s 3 group matches and decided he wouldn’t play for Ireland while Trapattoni was the manger.
Following the sacking of Trapattoni earlier this month, King was installed as interim manager for the next month’s double header.
He has wasted no time in re-calling Gibson to the squad who is enjoying a fine start to the season with unbeaten Everton.
Only last week Gibson reiterated his desire to pull on the green jersey again citing the only reason he left the Irish set up was because he became so disillusioned under Trapattoni.
Former Derry City players, James McClean and goalkeeper David Forde, are also included in the squad. However, there is no place for ex-Derry City striker, Connor Sammon.
Donegal’s Seamus Coleman is also included in the squad.
King has also recalled Celtic’s Anthony Stokes and Nottingham Forest star Andy Reid both of whom were exiled by the former manager after falling foul of his strict disciplinarian approach.
