The appointment of a design team for a major housing development in the city has been welcomed by a Derry MLA.
Sinn Fein’s Maeve McLaughlin was speaking after receiving an update on the Glen housing-community building project. When completed, the new development will result in 60 homes and a community centre.
The scheme replaces the Glen Court-Cedar Court flats complex which was demolished some years ago.
Ms McLaughlin described the appointment of the design team as “good news.”
She added: “This is major regeneration project for the Glen area and one I have been directly involved in my previous role as manager of GDI. This project will result in approximately 60 much need houses and a new community building.
“Whilst a lot of work has been completed in the area the current community centre is limited in what it can deliver. It is vital that this project ensures a youth drop in space as well as dedicated meeting and training rooms.”
Ms McLaughlin concluded:”It is also important that social clauses are built into this contract so that local people are employed in the construction.”
