A number of homes in the Waterside area of the Derry have been evacuated due to a suspected gas leak.
Emergency services are attending the alert on Chapel Road which has been closed off. Traffic diversions are in operation.
Around 20 homes have been evacuated and motorists are being advised to avoid the area.
One man told the Derry Daily he saw a “bubble in tarmac in the road with smoke coming out of it.”
One woman who was asked to leave her home said: “They just told us to leave. We don’t know anything. They told us nothing.”
However, Derry Daily has learned the alert, which began shortly after 12.30pm, was caused by an underground electrical cable overheating and sending out smoke. As the cable was close to a gas link emergency services were called to the scene.
