The lower half of Chapel Road in the Waterside has been reopened to traffic following a carbon monoxide incident.
Firefighters from Crescent Link fire station were called the scene at lunchtime yeserday after initial reports of a suspected gas leak.
One eye witness had reported a “bubble in the tarmac in the road with smoke coming out of it.”
However, it was quickly established a burning underground electrical cable was giving off carbon dioxide.
High levels of the gas were identified by firefighters using monitoring equipment and the road was dug up to allow the burning cables to be removed.
Northern Ireland Electricity repaired the damage whilst fire crews checked all properties in the immediate area to establish the gas had cleared and it was safe for the occupants to return.
Around 20 homes were evacuated during the alert which began around 12.30pm. They were allowed to their homes shortly after 2.00pm.
