The Derry “LondonDerry” Doire will arrive in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil either late on Saturday night or early Sunday morning, skipper Sean McCarter has said.
The Derry entry is around 800 miles from the finish line of Race 2 having set out of the 5,000 mile Atlantic crossing from Brest in France 25 days ago.
However, it looks unlikely the Derry Clipper, the one-time leader of Race 2, will cross the line in first place as the three leading yachts, PSP Logistics, Qingdao and Jamaica Get All Right have opened up a significant lead.
Derry skipper Sean McCarter reported the local entry had a “pretty good” day yesterday and was making “valuable miles” towards the finish.
He added: “At the moment we have just under 800 miles to go which is a little more than the Round the Ireland Race. After completing 4,000 miles, the final few miles to the line in Rio seems like a little skip!
“Depending on how kind the breeze is to us, we hope to arrive sometime on the night of 5 October or during the morning of 6 October.”
