Tomorrow marks the 45th anniversary of the 5 October 1968 Civil Rights march in Derry which came under attack from the RUC and B Specials.
Innocent men and women were attacked as the march made its way up Duke Street in the Waterside – television crews and photographers from across the world flashed images across the globe bringing Derry and the injustice being suffered by nationalists here to a worldwide audience.
The anniversary will be marked tonight with a programme of events to be held in Derry City Social Club in Crawford Square.
Fionnbarra O Dochartaigh, one of the organisers of the 1986 demonstration, will give a lecture entitled “From Springtown Camp to Duke Street” and a documentary film on the Civil Rights campaign will be screened followed by a finger buffet and entertainment provided by Damian Nixon. Admission is free.
