The Sinn Fein convention to select candidates for next year’s council elections will take place in Derry for the first time this weekend.
For the first time ever candidates for the Derry and Strabane council areas will be announced on the same day at a specially convened selection convention to be held from 4.00pm this Sunday at the party’s Ráth Mór offices in Creggan.
Announcing details of the convention, local MLA Raymond McCartney said the party would also choose party member to be co-opted on to Derry City Council to replace long-serving Lynn Fleming who has stepped down.
Mr McCartney said next year would see “big changes” in the make-up of local councils with the amalgamation of Derry and Strabane under the Review of Public Administration (RPA).
The Derry MLA said Sinn Féin felt with such changes on the way the party needed to be ready for the amalgamation and the challenges that it would throw up and have a strong team of elected representatives in place.
He added: For the first time ever candidates from the Derry and Strabane areas will be selected together on the one day. We have an excellent panel of candidates who will be building upon Sinn Féin’s positive legacy of hard work and diligent representation of all the people of the North West.
“We will also be holding our co option convention to select our replacement for Lynn Fleming who is stepping down as a member of Derry City Council after 16 years of representing the party and the people of the Waterside.”
