The Roads Service is facing calls to implement safety measures along one of the busiest arterial routes in the city which local residents claim has become “race track.”
Patricia Logue, Sinn Fein councillor for the Bogside and Brandywell areas, is calling for the measures after receiving complaints by local residents about the speed on traffic travelling along the Lone Moor Road which some residents claim has become a “race track” at night time.
Cllr Logue is urging DRD Road Service to “urgently: look at introducing a number of speed limit signs and associated safety measures along a half a mile section of the Lone Moor Road from the roundabout a at Letterkenny Road to the junction at the top of Westland Street .
She added it was “very apparent” the majority of vehicles travelling along the road were doing so well in excess of the 30mph speed limit.
She added: “Residents who have raised this issue with me have said at night times the speed of the cars travelling along this road is frightening with some travelling at 60-70mph and resembling a racetrack.
“A number of measures have taken place along the road with the installation of traffic islands and a pedestrian crossing at the top of Stanley’s Walk but motorists are still driving far too fast. It’s important drivers are reminded of the speed limit on this road so I am calling for signs to be erected along this main arterial route as a matter of urgency.”
Cllr Logue concluded: “It must also be remembered that along this road we have the Brandywell Stadium, Celtic Park, the City Cemetery, three main link roads to Creggan, two link roads to the Bogside and Brandywell, Bligh’s Lane with three schools, a shopping centre and industrial estate.”
