The family of Patrick Friel Curran, the popular young Derry man who died suddenly in America just under two weeks ago, are setting up a charity in his name to help families in similar situations bring their loved ones home.
Following Patrick’s passing in a New York Hospital, thousands of pounds were raised to help his family with the financial burden of bringing his body back to Derry.
The family were overwhelmed with the generosity and support received – the amount raised far exceeded what was required and they have donated the excess to build a school in India in his memory.
Returns from ongoing fundraisers will also be donated to Action With Effect, the locally-based charity who will oversee the construction of the school for destitute children.
Patrick’s mother, Linda, said his family were “truly touched” with the love and support they have received since his death and revealed details of the new charity.
She said: “We will be running a charity called ‘Bring Patrick Home’ to help other families who are in the same situation which I will get back to you all at a later date.”
Meanwhile, a major fundraiser for the Indian project takes place tonight in Pitchers Wine Bar and Restaurant at Foyle Golf Centre.
Tickets, priced £10 (also pay at the door), are available from the Bentley Bar (Linenhall Street), Fitzroys (Bridge Street), Quay West (Strand Road) and Tinney’s Bar (Patrick Street).
Entertainment will be provided by Stevie G, Conka (Freddie Mercury) McBride and disco with John Breslin. A raffle and auction will also take place. Doors open 8.00pm.
