International Day of Older Persons has been marked in Derry with a special event held the city’s Tower Hotel.
Apex Housing in partnership with Derry Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP), PSNI and Oaklee Housing hosted the information event which focussed on health and wellbeing as well as services available for older persons in the North West.
Key presentations were delivered by the Foyle PSNI Crime Prevention Officer, Project Manager from the North West Ageing Well Together and the Western Health and Social Care Trust. The keynote speaker was Claire Keatinge, NI Commissioner for Older People.
Mayor of Derry Martin Reilly said International Day of Older Persons as it recognised the positive contribution older people made to our communities and the contribution they were still making.
Cllr Reilly added: “I would like to congratulate all of the agencies involved in organising this event. It’s always great to meet our elderly citizens and I’m delighted to see such an entertaining and informative event being put together for their benefit.”
Sheena McCallion, director of Housing and Care Services at Apex Housing, said they were committed to the safety, health and wellbeing of all their residents
“This was a wonderful opportunity to work in partnership with other agencies to ensure that our elderly citizens have access to advice and support for issues that matter to them. Today has been a great success with all of our residents having a good afternoon’s craic, celebrating International Day of Older Persons and getting a little help and advice along the way.”
Cllr Paul Fleming, chairperson of the Derry PCSP the group was delighted to support the event
He added: “I can assure you that the safety of our elderly residents and indeed the safety of all our communities is a key priority for us. The Derry PCSP will strive to do everything it can to ensure that our elderly citizens can live in peace without fear of crime.”
